HOW TO FIGURE OUT YOUR CURL TYPE AND THE BEST WAY TO STYLE IT

HOW TO FIGURE OUT YOUR CURL TYPE AND THE BEST WAY TO STYLE IT

Anyone with curly hair understands the struggle of taming and owning their curly looks. Sometimes, even figuring out what hair you have off of a hair chart can be confusing. What makes it even more difficult is that one person’s hair can be different textures in different places.

However, if you know that you have type 2 hair, you understand the struggle of getting a relaxed look that still fights frizz. Here are some essential tips you should do to make sure that your locks are getting the care they need to be their perfect curly, wavy self!

Type 2: Wavy Hair

If you have Type 2 waves, you will notice that these waves are bendable. The texture tends to fine to coarse, and you will have an “S” shape pattern that lays close to the scalp. Type 2 is further broken down into two categories: 2A and 2B.

Type 2A

For those who have 2A hair, your strands will be fine, and you can easily straighten it. People with this type of hair shouldn’t use heavy or strong styling products because that can cause your hair to be weighed down, causing your hair to look lifeless and limp.

Styling Tip for 2A Wavy Hair

Don’t use anything too heavy for your hair. Instead, choose a light cream or mousse, like this Styling Cream from Rene Fris. It helps to add volume and dimension to your fine hair, and can even help to repair the damage on your hair. It doesn’t weigh down your hair, but instead, it still allows your hair to move naturally while giving it shape.

Type 2B

The “S” shape in 2B type hair will be more prominent and will be even closer to the head. Someone with this type of hair will likely have a beach wave. Type 2B hair is more coarse, frizzy, and thicker in diameter than 2A. It will take more effort to get your hair straightened.

Styling Tip for 2B Wavy Hair

Try the plopping method! The plopping method helps your hair to stay shiny and defined without damaging your hair from the heat. To plop your hair, put your freshly washed hair in the middle of a t-shirt. The best way to do it is with the t-shirt on the bed, with your hair flipped over. Then, tie the sleeves of the T-shirt into a knot. Give it 15 minutes, and then style your hair as you normally would.

General Styling Tips For Wavy Hair

  • Don’t use a towel to dry your hair. The harsh cotton can be the downfall of many people’s curly hair. Using a towel to dry your hair can cause unwanted frizz. If you really can’t give up the towel, consider using a microfiber hair towels instead.
  • Comb your hair when it’s wet. The best time to comb your hair is right before you get out of the shower, and right after. Any other time you might be causing unnecessary frizz. Because 2A hair is often so fine and dries so quickly, you might be better off not combing it at all.
  • Give your hair some help. To get the hair of your dreams, you have to give it some assistance to get there. Your hair will dry in the shape that you set it in, so make sure to twist your hair into spirals when you put the product in it. Do it by sections to get the best results.
