For many women out there, bad hair days seem inevitable. Frizzy, greasy, or flyaway hair will occur, and there appears to be nothing we can do about it but pop on a hat or headband to cover up the offending hair.

While you might have been blaming genetics all these years, there is likely another suspect: how you have been washing your hair. Here are six common mistakes that people make and how to avoid them.

1. Brushing From The Top Down

When you are combing your hair in the shower, or right before or after it, it might seem like the best way to do it is going from root to tip. However, this might actually cause your hair to break.

If you do choose to comb your hair in the shower, make sure to do it right after conditioning. It’s better to start right at the ends and then work your way up the roots. When combing, use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush.

2. Your Shower Water Is Too Hot (Or Maybe Too Cold!)

Using the wrong temperature in the shower can have a negative impact on your hair. If your shower is too hot or too cold, it might reduce the amount of time you want to stand under the water. Because of this hurried shower, your hair might still have shampoo or conditioner residue left in it, causing it to look dull or limp.

3. You Wash It Every Day

Just because you have gotten used to washing your hair every day, doesn’t mean that it is best for the health of your hair. By shampooing it seven times a week, you are more likely to experience a flaky or dry scalp, because your hair is being stripped of its natural oils.

4. You Are Using The Wrong Products For Your Hair

Products that are meant for curly hair isn’t right for fine hair, and vice versa. For those with coarse, curly hair, it is better to use sulfate-free products, like the Anti-Frizz Cleanser and Conditioner from Rene Fris’ line. It helps battle the natural dryness of your hair to create the optimal scalp environment.

And if you have thin hair, you could try this Thickening Cleanser & Conditioner. It won’t weigh down your locks but still helps to double the size and volume of each follicle.

5. You Shampoo From The Bottom Up

If you start at the middle or bottom of your hair and then work the shampoo up, it might be messing up your hair. Your roots tend to be the oiliest, so it is better to start up there and work your way down.

5. You Condition Your Roots

If you are conditioner your hair from the top down, it could be weighing down your hair. Instead, apply the conditioner midway down your scalp all the way to the end of your hair. Make sure to avoid the roots, and leave it on for five to ten minutes.

6. You Wring Your Hair Dry

If you are having trouble taming your hair, it might be caused by how you dry your hair. If you have hair that is prone to breakage, you should never wring out your hair too vigorously. Try to let it air dry as much as possible.
